GEOPAM international network

At present, the network counts as members more than thirty academics from more than ten countries, who belong to leading universities in the Americas and Europe.

The International GEOPAM Network is a group that seeks to give public, international scope to individual and local projects that have to do with temporal processes and spatial constructions of the Americas during the long modern period (fifteenth to nineteenth centuries). The GEOPAM Network is distinguished by its promotion of academic meetings between institutions and its members, the creation of collaborative research, the realization of experiences of places, and scholarly advice in the formulation and execution of academic and cultural projects.

GEOPAM was formed in 2017 thanks to funding from the International Cooperation program (REDI170261) of the National Research and Development Agency of Chile (formerly CONICYT). The main objective of this project was to create a network for high-quality academic research among international institutions, in order to investigate the first stage of globalization following the geopolitical transformations of the American continent during the 16th and 17th centuries.

GEOPAM empowers personal research agendas through collaborative research. Collaborative projects are expressly designed to create points of contact among its members. Collaboration in common foci allows a decentralization of perspectives, disciplines and methods in order to mobilize localities and individual researchers towards the discussion of matters of long or short duration that have a hemispheric or global scope and that present a current challenge for the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts.

The collective and individual investigations within the GEOPAM network are motivated by shared concerns. We work from a common language that does not seek to homogenize responses but rather to ensure starting points that result in rich and plural interpretations.

It is a matter of a repertoire of questions in continuous reformulation, but outlined along some fundamental lines whose origin is in geopolitics. We understand this last term not only as the policy developed by a state based on its geographical conditions, but also as the different forms – strategic and tactical – of instrumentalizing space in pursuit of economic and social objectives. Geopolitics highlights the potential of knowledge about the relationship between space and power. This knowledge is the result of the constructions and exchanges developed by various persons and institutions in America and connected that knowledge with the various scales that have coexisted since then (local, intercontinental and global).

Past meetings

The Network facilitates meetings of its members through regular academic events in various countries with the support of the academic and cultural institutions with which its members are affiliated. The network organizes at least two meetings a year, either workshops or colloquiums, where priority is given to the discussion of works in progress, intuitions that seek support, and to the presentation of study materials with scholarly and cultural potential.

Conversation creates results of excellence and relevance in scholarly practice. Geopam wants to advise and assist in the formulation and presentation of cultural and academic projects by colleagues and by other scholarly groups. Examples of projects in which we offer our support include exhibitions, international conferences, editions of books, and special issues of journals.
